Hand of Fatima - metal embossing and wood
Michele Parlee
3 Hours
Workshop Description
The hand of the Lady Fatima, daughter of the prophet Mohammed, has been used as a symbol of patience, abundance and faithfulness. It is also a popular belief that if you put the palm of the hand up in front of you, you will be protected from the "evil eye". In this class you will make one "hand of Fatima". The hand will be made of wood and will be decorated with embossed metal. You will paint your hand with the acrylic color of your choice. Then you will embellish it with embossed tin. You will learn basic metal embossing techniques, how to antique the metal using India ink, how to assemble the hand, and how to embellish the hand in your own personal style. You may even want to put a small image in the center of the tin as a form of shrine. Although we will be using the metal to decorate the wood, once you know the basic techniques necessary to emboss the metal, you will be able to make it in any shape that you desire: hearts, flowers, etc. You can also use these techniques to embellish frames, journals, books, greeting cards, ATC's and more.
